DESCRIPTION
Bere barley is a heirloom barley variety that has never reached its peak of popularity with farmers or distillers due to its low yield. It was never on the "recommended crop list" for farmers. The ancient local race would have been almost lost if it had not been for the resurrection mission forged by Barony Mill with the help of Orkney College (UHI Agronomy Institute).
This 2011 whiskey vintage, distilled from six-row grain cultivated in Orkney in the summer of 2010, shows the longevity of the Bere partnership which began in 2005.
It is a Single Malt with a unique character.
Bottled at the distillery with Islay spring water, unfiltered and dye-free.
Tastings
Nose: floral notes (geraniums and orange blossom) followed by mint, lime and chocolate. Then come notes of malted barley, a hint of citrus fruits and apricot jam.
Palate: light notes of chocolate, apricot jam and zephyrs with herbs and citrus fruits. The texture is robust with barley sugar, chocolate and fudge. Dried banana, vanilla and marshmallow crisps.
Finish: the marine freshness shows through with iodized notes. Barley sugar and green fruits enter the mouth.
