Everything started when David Gölles' father, Alois Gölles, and Josef Zotter collaborated to design the chocolate spirit. That was the day the family began making rum. David Gölles, the son, subsequently established the Ruotker company in Riegersburg, Austria.
Ruotker's now sells premium gin, rum, and whiskies.

The Ron Johan Rum brand is devoted to both the Caribbean (Ron) and the Archduke Johann (Johan).
