The Edradour 18 Years Old DFR Amarone Cask is an exceptional Highland single malt Scotch whisky that combines the robust, fruit-forward style of the Edradour Distillery with the influence of Italian red wine casks. Distilled in 2007, this whisky was bottled in 2026 as a small-batch release at 46% ABV after 18 years of maturation. First-fill Amarone hogsheads from Dal Forno Romano in the Valpolicella region of northern Italy were used for maturation. Hence the designation DFR, which stands for Dal Forno Romano. The intense character of the renowned Amarone wine complements the robust Edradour distillate, adding notes of dark fruit, spice, and pronounced tannins.
The time-honored Edradour Distillery in the Scottish Highlands uses small stills, wooden washbacks, and traditional worm tubs, resulting in a robust distillate that is particularly well-suited for extended cask maturation. The Edradour 18 Years Amarone Cask is bottled as a small batch and is neither chill-filtered nor colored, thus preserving the natural character of its long cask maturation. The combination of the 2007 vintage, 18 years of maturation, and first-fill Amarone hogsheads from Dal Forno Romano makes this bottling a special choice for lovers of long-aged Highland whiskies with a pronounced wine cask influence. The 70cl bottle is presented in a suitable gift box.
Taster's note
Color: Dark amber with reddish-copper highlights.
Nose: Stewed blackberries and ripe plums, accompanied by muscovado sugar and warming baking spices.
Palate: Full-bodied, intense, and fruit-driven, with black cherry jam, dark chocolate cream, robust oak spice, and the deep fruit notes from the Amarone casks.
Finish: Long and powerful, with dark fruit, cocoa, mature oak, black and pink peppercorns, and a pleasantly dry tannin character.
The Edradour 18 Years Old DFR Amarone Cask is best served neat at around 18–20°C to allow its intense red wine and fruit character to fully develop. A few drops of still water at 46% ABV can reveal additional fruit and spice nuances. Pair it with dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, mature hard cheeses, game dishes, or desserts with black cherries and dark berries. This bottling is particularly interesting for tastings of different Edradour wine cask maturations, where the influence of the Dal Forno Romano Amarone casks can be specifically compared.
