This Guadeloupe Pure Single Rum from Habitation Velier is made entirely from fresh sugarcane juice at the Papa Rouyo distillery in Goyave. The distillery continues the legacy of the sugarcane planter Charles Albert Ruscade, known locally as Papa Rouyo. This 2022 release uses two sugarcane varieties, Canne Moulle and Canne Rouge.
The juice was distilled in 2022 in batches in two copper pot stills named Agathe & Danielle. The distillate has a high ester content of 430.1 g/hlpa, pointing to an intensely aromatic, distinctive spirit.
The rum then matured for one year in the tropical climate of Guadeloupe, in ex-Cognac casks and French oak, before Habitation Velier bottled it in 2023. Even in this short time, the Angel's Share exceeded 8 percent.
It is bottled at a cask strength of 56.7% ABV, with no colouring, no added sugar and no cold filtration. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in a gift box, making it a fitting choice for rum enthusiasts and collectors.
