Kilchoman Loch Gruinart Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a characterful bottling from the independent Kilchoman Distillery on the Scottish island of Islay. Founded in 2005, this farm distillery is located in the west of the island and specializes in heavily peated single malts with a distinctly Islay character. This bottling is named after Loch Gruinart, a scenic area in northern Islay known for its expansive bay and surrounding nature reserve. With this whisky, Kilchoman highlights the close connection between the distillery, the island, and its rugged Atlantic landscape. Kilchoman Loch Gruinart is bottled at a robust 46% ABV and presented in a 70cl bottle with a gift box.
Stylistically, Kilchoman Loch Gruinart Islay Whisky embodies the combination of peat smoke, maritime influences, and malty depth for which Kilchoman is renowned. The distillery is one of the few independent distilleries on Islay and controls numerous production steps itself, with traditional methods playing a key role. At a robust 46% ABV, this single malt retains a pronounced structure and is particularly well-suited for lovers of smoky and peaty Islay whiskies. The combination of its regional origin, distinctive distillery character, and presentation in a gift box also makes Loch Gruinart an interesting bottling for Kilchoman collectors and Islay whisky tastings.
Taster's note
Colour: Pale gold with warm highlights.
Nose: Intense peat smoke with maritime hints, fresh citrus and malty notes, accompanied by delicate sweetness and spicy nuances.
Palate: Powerful and balanced with dense smoke, malt and citrus, as well as maritime spice, subtle spices and a touch of sweetness.
Finish: Long and smoky with peat, spicy malt and dry, lingering maritime notes.
Kilchoman Loch Gruinart is particularly well-suited for enjoying neat at around 18 to 20 °C, although a few drops of still water can reveal additional facets of the peat smoke. It pairs well with smoked salmon, oysters, strong hard cheeses, or smoked and grilled meats. Dark chocolate also provides an interesting counterpoint to the smoky and maritime structure. The gift box also makes this bottling an ideal present for lovers of peated Islay single malt Scotch whisky.
