Obsidian is a naturally occurring type of rock that is formed by the rapid cooling of lava.
This type of rock was sacred to the Mayas. They believed that the obsidian was a gift from the underworld, a gift from the gods of Xibalbá — Xibalbá also means translated «place of fear».
