The Octomore EDITION: 16.1 Super Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt 59.3% Vol. 0.7 l in tin box is an exceptional bottling from Bruichladdich, which once again impressively underlines why Octomore is regarded worldwide as the benchmark for extremely heavily peated whiskies. With a phenol content of 101.4 ppm, this edition is one of the "milder" Octomore expressions, but remains extremely intense compared to other Islay malts.

Octomore 16.1 was distilled from the Concerto barley variety, which is grown in the Scottish Highlands. After distillation, it matured for five years exclusively in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, which gives it a clear, precise structure and a powerful interplay of aromas. It is bottled in its natural color, not chill-filtered and at a strong cask strength of 59.3% vol. which emphasizes its unadulterated character even more.

The presentation in the elegant tin box underlines the collector's value of this limited bottling, which once again proves how masterfully Bruichladdich has mastered the interplay between peat intensity, cask maturation and youthful freshness. 

Tasting notes:

Color: Light gold.

Nose: Intensely peaty, with smoke, vanilla, sweet malt, citrus fruits and a fine spiciness from the bourbon barrel.

Taste: Powerful and oily, dominated by peat smoke, accompanied by caramel, honey, toasted wood, ripe fruit and a subtle sweetness.

Finish: Very long, warming and smoky, with a balance of salty coastal breeze, vanilla and oak.

Octomore 16.1 is best enjoyed neat in a nosing glass or with a few drops of water to reveal further layers of flavor. It harmonizes perfectly with dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, strong blue cheeses or grilled steak, where its peaty intensity creates exciting contrasts.
