Lillet Rouge 17% is a traditional French wine aperitif from Podensac near Bordeaux, based on carefully selected red wines from the Gironde region. Only red grapes are used in its production; internationally, Lillet specifies Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are blended with proprietary fruit macerates, prepared in Podensac according to a traditional recipe. Cold-macerated oranges, sourced from Spain and Haiti among other places, play a key role. A small amount of quinine completes the composition. After blending, Lillet Rouge is aged in French oak barrels, allowing the individual components to harmonize perfectly.

At 17% alcohol by volume, Lillet Rouge is available in a 0.75-liter bottle and is designed to be enjoyed neat, as well as in long drinks and cocktails. The history of the house dates back to 1872, when Paul and Raymond Lillet founded Maison Lillet Frères. The high wine content distinguishes Lillet from classic spirit-based aperitifs and makes proper storage important: once opened, the bottle should be kept in the refrigerator and ideally consumed within three to four weeks. Lillet Rouge is also vegan, gluten-free, and wheat-free. Its versatility, from chilled aperitifs and Lillet Rouge Tonic to various spritz variations, makes it a French classic for bars, patios, and social gatherings.

Taster's note

In the glass, Lillet Rouge presents itself in an intense ruby ​​red. On the nose, ripe red fruits unfold with an aromatic and inviting character. On the palate, fresh orange and red fruits combine with delicate vanilla and select spice notes to create a harmonious interplay. The finish is fruity, subtly spicy, and pleasantly lingering.

Lillet Rouge is best served well chilled or on ice and can be enjoyed neat with an orange slice. A Lillet Rouge Tonic is particularly easy to make with 1 part Lillet Rouge and 2 parts tonic water, plenty of ice cubes, and a fresh orange slice. As an aperitif, it pairs well with cheese, charcuterie, savory appetizers, and small French or Mediterranean-inspired starters. This French wine aperitif is also suitable as a base for spritz drinks, sangria, and classic cocktails.
