Guidalberto IGT 2024 comes from Tenuta San Guido, the storied Tuscan estate behind Sassicaia, and is often described as the "younger sibling" of that iconic wine. Despite standing in such famous company, Guidalberto has carved out its own reputation as one of Italy's most sought-after reds, offering a taste of Super Tuscan craftsmanship at a more accessible level.
The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, grown on the limestone- and stone-rich soils of the Tuscan coast. This terroir gives the fruit its distinctive structure, minerality and precision, marrying international grape varieties with a genuinely Tuscan sense of place.
Winemaking begins with temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by roughly twelve months of maturation in 225-litre barriques, mostly French oak with a smaller portion of American oak. A mix of new and previously used barrels helps preserve the fruit's character while adding layers of complexity. The wine then rests briefly in bottle before release.
At 13.5% ABV, Guidalberto 2024 is a beautifully balanced, precisely built red with real depth and ageing potential projected to at least 2035 - equally enjoyable now or set aside for further cellaring.
Tasting Note
In the glass, this wine shows a vivid purplish-red hue. The nose opens with fresh blackcurrant, lavender and thyme, joined by subtler hints of bergamot and blood orange. On the palate it is elegant and well-balanced, showing lively freshness, harmonious acidity and a faint saline minerality. Well-integrated tannins give the wine structure and depth, leading into a clean, precise, and pleasantly long finish. Measured acidity is 6.3 g/l with residual sugar of 0.22 g/l.
It pairs well with grilled or pan-fried beef, Florentine steak and quality roast beef, as well as lamb, game, braised veal or mature hard cheeses. Serving between 16-18°C best reveals its aromatic depth and elegant structure.
